What is Exam AI-200?
AI-200, Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure, is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate credential. It validates intermediate developer skills for designing, building, deploying, securing, observing, and troubleshooting AI-enabled cloud solutions on Microsoft Azure.
Its center of gravity is the application back end: containerized compute, data platforms that support vector workloads, event and messaging integration, serverless APIs, secrets, configuration, telemetry, and operational troubleshooting. It is therefore broader than an exam about calling a model API and more specialized than the former general-purpose Azure developer path.
Who is the exam intended for?
AI-200 is aimed at developers who contribute to the complete lifecycle of AI solutions on Azure, especially the back-end services and components that make those solutions scalable, secure, observable, and reliable. The official role is Developer and the level is Intermediate.

Knowledge expected before you prepare
Microsoft lists proficiency with Azure SDKs and third-party SDKs, Azure data management, monitoring and troubleshooting, messaging and eventing, vector databases, Python, and containerized applications. There is no separate prerequisite certification, but the scope assumes practical development experience rather than introductory knowledge alone.
A candidate should be comfortable reading and writing application code, working with cloud identities and secrets, deploying services, inspecting logs and metrics, and choosing between synchronous, asynchronous, event-driven, serverless, and container-orchestrated designs.
Which exam did AI-200 replace?
Microsoft identifies Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate (AI-200) as the replacement for Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204). AZ-204 and its certification retired on July 31, 2026, while AI-200 became available on July 9, 2026. Microsoft also lists AI-200T00 as the replacement course for the retired AZ-204T00 courseware.
This is a successor path, not a simple exam rename. AI-200 keeps important Azure development concerns such as containers, functions, events, messaging, security, configuration, and observability, but reorganizes them around back-end systems for AI solutions. Candidates should compare the current AI-200 skills outline instead of assuming every AZ-204 objective was carried over.
AI-200 did not replace AI-102
The similar AI exam codes can cause confusion. AI-200 replaced the AZ-204 developer certification path. AI-102, associated with Azure AI Engineer Associate, retired on June 30, 2026 and was replaced by AI-103, Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate. AI-200 emphasizes the Azure cloud back end for AI applications; AI-103 is the direct successor to the former AI engineering credential.

The overlap matters: an experienced AZ-204 developer already has useful foundations. The gap is the explicit use of vector databases, embeddings, semantic retrieval, RAG-oriented data patterns, modern container operations, and end-to-end observability for AI-driven workloads.
Is AI-200 the right exam for you?
Choose AI-200 when your role is to engineer the Azure platform and back-end services behind AI applications. It is a strong fit if you turn prototypes into production services, integrate databases and events, deploy containers and functions, protect application secrets, and diagnose distributed systems.
If you are only beginning with AI concepts, a fundamentals credential may be a better first step. If your focus is specifically building AI apps and agents as the successor to AI-102, compare AI-103. If your goal is general Azure administration or architecture, use the role-based path aligned with those responsibilities.
